Gaming survey

A few weeks ago I ran a small survey of people’s information gathering habits about games. It wasn’t very scientific in nature and I was pretty sure I wouldn’t get enough responses for the sample size to be large enough to draw meaningful conclusions from, but with 64 replies it did better than I hoped. Anyway, for those who are interested, the results are after the cut.

Revolutionary new patch system

I know I said I wouldn’t talk about WAR here but this is too cool to share. I’m home sick today but last night we were given a press brief to distribute from today. I hope I’m not pre-empting anything here. The brief is from the EA Mythic studio manager April de Poisson and it’s about the patch system for WAR.

Bloginati

Thanks very much to Ryan Shwayder for adding me to the Bloginati webfeed.

For those of you interested in how games are put together, bookmark it. People who actually put games together for a living like Raph Koster, Scott Jennings, Richard Bartle, Steve Danuser, Ryan Shwayder and many other industry flag bearers pour out pearls of wisdom and nuggets of insider commentary there.

Scooby Doo Moments

I’ve decided not to keep the anonymity thing going. I figure that most of the people who read this blog know or strongly suspect who I am anyhow so I’ve done a bit of tidying and editing to reflect that.

For those who didn’t know or those who were looking for my blog, this is the personal blog of Iain Compton – aka IainC, aka Requiel – the former DAoC Europe GM and now the English Community Manager for WAR in Europe.

Please note that this is not an unofficial communications channel for Goa or EA Mythic. I’m not here to sort out issues or answer specific questions about WAR. That’s what I do on community sites and our official website with the sanction of my managers. This is just a place where I like to talk about MMO design, concepts, news and whatever else happens to interest me at the time.

So here we are..

This is more of a disclaimer than an actual post with actual content. Actually. This is a place where I want to discuss issues relating to managing communities, lay out my thoughts on a number of topics related to my work and, occasionally rant. By and large the posts are not the sort of thing that I could post on community forums under my professional nom de plume and are in no way intended to be representative of the opinions or policies of the company I work for.

I’m not going to post commercially sensitive information or anything that could get me fired (because I’m not as stupid as my players would have you believe), however I’ll be posting things from an insider’s view of a very strange industry. I’m going to try and avoid naming the company or the project that I work for however I am fairly sure that anyone who puts a modicum of thought into it can probably work it out after a while. If you do, I’d appreciate it if you also refrained from mentioning it in comments on this blog. Thanks.
